Welcome to the English-language section of nrc.nl, the website of NRC Handelsblad.
NRC International is the English-language website of the leading Dutch daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad. It aims to serve a worldwide audience with news, background, analysis and comment from NRC Handelsblad. We offer news about the Netherlands for those living and working in the country, as well as features and opinion articles aimed at anyone interested in a European take on current affairs. We translate the best journalism from NRC Handelsblad on a wide range of topics, including the most compelling stories from our many correspondents worldwide.
NRC Handelsblad is recognised for its authoritative reporting of national politics, foreign affairs, financial news and coverage of arts and culture. It has a liberal profile and is targeted at an affluent and well-educated readership. The paper's opinion pages are regarded as essential reading for everyone interested in the public debate in the Netherlands. The afternoon edition of the paper, established in the mid-nineteenth century, has a daily circulation of around 220,000 copies while its youthful morning offshoot, nrc.next, founded in March 2006, attracts a steadily mounting readership which now stands at 90,000.
The paper's website, nrc.nl, publishes articles matching the journalistic standards of its paper editions and offers much of its content for free. Around 240,000 readers visit the site daily – up to 2.2 million on a monthly basis. A substantial number of the website’s visitors are Dutch people living and working abroad.
Our partners
This English-language initiative was set up in September 2008 in partnership with Germany’s Spiegel Online. Since its launch, NRC International has also teamed up with Politiken in Denmark, and the Dutch broadcaster Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
Spiegel Online, together with its print magazine Der Spiegel, is one of the most respected journalistic brands in Germany. Its large English-language site attracts readers from across the world. Politiken is the leading quality newspaper in Denmark. Together we strive for a further extension of our network of European quality journalism.
Radio Netherlands Wordwide is the Dutch international public broadcaster. It offers news and analysis about the Netherlands and the world, including radio programmes and video, in ten languages.
