Sixth victim of Apeldoorn attack dies

A member of the Royal Marechaussee, a military police force, died in hospital today after being wounded in Thursday's attack in Apeldoorn, bringing the total death toll to seven including the perpetrator.

Roel Nijenhuis (55) was a civilian member of the Royal Marechaussee. He was working as a driver with th transport group of the Marechaussee in Apeldoorn when he was hit by Karst T.'s black Suzuki on Thursday.

Defence minister Eimert Van Middelkoop, deputy defence minister Jack de Vries and secretary-general Ton Annink expressed their sympathy. "His death is a heavy blow for the defence ministry and the Royal Marechaussee in particular. Our thoughts are with his family and friends", they said in a statement.

Four people were killed on the spot when 38-year-old Karst T. drove his car through a crowd that had come to greet the royal family in Apeldoorn on Queen's Day. Two victims, including Nijenhuis, later died in hospital. The driver, Karst T., also died in hospital early on Friday morning.
