NRC International ends daily operations
NRC Media is sorry to announce its English language website, NRC
International, will be discontinued after the June 9 Dutch election. It is
with great regret that we give up NRC International, after nearly two
wonderful years of publishing in English. The website has been a remarkable
journalistic endeavour and a rewarding platform to present all NRC has to
offer to an international audience. Our European partnerships, with Spiegel
Online, Politiken and Corriere della Sera, as well as our
Dutch affiliation with RNW, have proven a great addition to the outwards
looking journalism NRC holds paramount.
In other economic times, this might have been enough, but today, NRC has to focus on what it does best: making the greatest papers in the Netherlands for its Dutch readership. "We must set priorities," NRC Media publishing director Hans Nijenhuis said, as he announced the cutback measure last week. NRC's main publications in the Netherlands are the printed dailies NRC Handelsblad and nrc.next and the website nrc.nl. As part of the cost reduction, NRC is also abandoning its video productions and its quarterly Focus.
Although the daily operations of NRC International will be suspended after the upcoming election, NRC is looking at possibilities to publish in English in the future. There are many interesting, European and international, issues that NRC could offer a Dutch angle to, and there are developments in the Netherlands that deserve to be covered for the world to read. Whenever NRC decides to report such an issue in English, we will alert our readers through our newsletter and our Facebook page. If you have not already signed up for either of these, please do.
We would like to also take this opportunity to thank all our faithful readers around the world and hope you will stick around for our election coverage in the coming week.
